Somehow I ended up eating at SMITH Restaurant Winnipeg on four occasions over five days when I went to visit Winnipeg last…but to be honest, I kind of knew we were meant for each other from the beginning. The Hudson Bay inspired aesthetic had me doe eyed from the first time I laid eyes on the Hudson Bay blanket upholstery, the lacquered sleek minimal black tables, the cow hide rugs, to the petrified stumps and antler chandeliers. My inner Canadiana was so thrilled!!! But what really stole my heart was the menu.
The menu is a mix of elevated Canadian comfort dishes and classic worldly dishes. I dare you to read the whole menu. Here are my suggestions!
The Red Flannel Hash – SMITH made corned beef, beets, potato, onion topped with two poached eggs. Decadence would be adding some hollandaise to the mix…which you bet I did. I accompanied this with a fresh juice, but I’d also recommend a mimosa or spiked latte.
The Kale Salad – Thinly shaved kale massaged with a citrusy lemon vinaigrette, walnuts, currants, and fresh cheese! Light and hearty. Add a chicken breast and you are set!
Southwest Shrimp Salad – Romaine & iceberg, avocado, mango, red onion, tomato, cucumber, cilantro, crispy tortilla strips, poached tiger prawn and lime vinaigrette. Refreshing and zesty.
The SMITH Burger – 6 oz. Canadian beef striploin, caramelized onions, maple smoked cheddar, crispy bacon, tomato, roasted garlic mayo, iceberg on a sesame seed brioche. Served with house pickles, house cut fries, and yes…add that fried egg please!
Perhaps you are in for nibbles and wine. Their Charcuterie boards are DELIGHTFUL, and oh so beautiful!!! So is the Pounded Cheese. An appy you MUST have if you’re a fan of cheese. A garlicy creamy spread with cider vinegar, chives and fresh toasted sourdough. For mains…
Rack of Lamb – Herbs persillade, au jus and puy lentils.
NY Steak – Garlic confit and SMITH seasoning salt.
Sides? Well SMITH Truffle Fries with asiago and thyme of course.
What I love most about SMITH is that it’s classy, polished, and high end, but it really fits any occasion. Any food mood I’m in, be it a light snack, a sweet treat and coffee, a night of drinks and music, or a sit down formal dinner, to a quiet lunch with friends…SMITH is the most suiting spot with such an amazing atmosphere (within Inn at the Forks) and a brilliantly curated menu that is consistently delicious! By far one of the best restaurants I’ve experienced in my travels. It’s simply my style, my food, my people. Can you resonate with a restaurant? Well, I definitely do!
